Cuban Guacamole
This Cuban version of one of life’s most enjoyable dips is sweeter than its Mexican counterpart. With tropical fruit (we used pineapple) and lime juice, this version is sweeter, but just as spicy, smooth, and addictive as your favorite guacamole.
Tips and Tricks
Why pineapple?
The first time I tried Cuban guacamole was at a Cuban restaurant in Waltham, MA where they used pieces of pineapple. I loved it so much, I couldn’t imagine developing this recipe without pineapple.
That said, not all recipes call for it. You can substitute with a ¼ cup of sour orange juice, add a bit more lime to this, or leave out entirely.
What else can I add?
Like all guacamole recipes, you can change this any way you prefer. If you normally add tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro to your guac, go for it! There’s really no wrong answer. Explore different flavors and see what you like the best.
How to make this spicy
I opted to add some chipotle adobo sauce to my guacamole - I love the smoky flavor it provides. But if you don’t have it or just don’t enjoy it, you can always add jalapeños, some cayenne, or another spicy red pepper.
Ingredients:
3 ripe avocados
1 ½ tbsp fresh lime juice
3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tbsp)
1 tsp kosher salt
2 tsp sauce from a can of chipotle peppers in adobe sauce (more if you like your guacamole spicy)
1/3 cup fresh or canned pineapple, cut into tiny morsels.
Optional: jalapeños, tomatoes, cilantro, red onion
Directions:
In a medium-sized bowl, mash your avocados and add the lime juice. Add the garlic, kosher salt, and chipotle in adobe sauce. Taste test here to be sure the spice and salt levels are right. You can always add more if the flavors aren’t there for you.
Add the pineapple and mix together until it’s all smooth, and you’re completely satisfied with the flavor.
Serve with tortilla or banana chips!
